The Magnolia Bakery

image39

Before actually going to the Magnolia Bakery I had heard rumors about their amazing cupcakes. It seemed like every New Yorker knew about this little place in Greenwich, it was shown on Sex and the City and it even made it onto SNL. For me this is a bit crazy, coming from Sweden were cupcakes are not common at all...to us they just like regular muffins...
But when I visited NYC last spring and lived close to the bakery, I saw that every hour of the day there were a line (for almost 1 block!) of people waiting to buy some of the famous magnolia cupcakes. So I decided to try them out, and a year later I have to admit....I have actually turned into one of those crazy new yorkers that speaks of the cupcakes like "a must when visiting NYC!" =)

I löööve....

Fashion gives back

We all remember the new and innovative style that Lance Armstrong brought us with the stylish way off showing your sympathy and support to help prevent cancer with the yellow bracelets. After that there was an explosion with charities selling the plastic bracelet all in different colors.
Now Saks Fifth Avenue are comming with their version (little late?)...a black bracelet with the word Charity on it. The profits will go to provide clean water in less fortunate countries....but couldn't Saks have been a little more creative with the products? After all they are a high end department store selling the latest fashion.....

Metropolitan Museum of Art

So, last week was our "exciting" wild card pick in my Art of New York class. Fortunately I had found an exhibit that was right up my ally....hopefully my teacher will agree with me that this is actually considered art!
The exhibit was at the Met, and since this was the last week it was showing it was perfect timing. I also found out that the museum does not charge an actual admission fee, you pay as you please by donating. Unfortunately, all the tourists flocked inside did not seam to know this and hapilied payed the 20 dollar recommended donation. Anyway, the exhibit was called "blog.mode: addressing fashion" and consisted of a number of famous couture dresses. For example the little black dress that laid the groundwork for the Dior brand, and John Galliano famous bias cut dress. But my favorite was the dress by Oliver Theyskens for Nina Ricci. All in all, It was an interesting exhibit...especially when you only have to donate the admission ;)

Elsa meets Sweden

Last Valentines Day I got a big surprise from the hubby, wrapped in a purple blanket was the cutest little puppy. I had actually already seen her photo online, where I totally feel in love with her and would not stop talking about her!
I was looking through some pictures today and found one of the first ones of Elsa, her first encounter with the Swedish culture;)

Customized Art

I love these customized decks! All are handmade and made after the customers direction or just after the artist own creativity.
I am planning to put three of these in my living room=)

Wishlist!

One of my classes at FIT is Art in New York, which turned out to be one of the best ways to get to know my new home city =)
Every week our teacher takes us to different museums and exhibits around the city. Last week I experienced some contemporary art in Soho at the New Museum, where just the building is a piece of art!
Today we went to the Japan Society to see the exhibition of Shibata Zeshin, an amazing lacquer artist. Anyway, the most interesting pieces I found at the giftshop, of course ;)
I want one of these Nooka watches, I especially fell in love with this one...sorry hubby, looks like you have some competition=)

Spend v. Save

The Gladiator shoes are one of the hottest trends for Spring and Summer this year. They have been around for a year or two but now we mere mortals can finally find them for a little less then about a month worth of salery....
